Twitter released a blog post on Tuesday detailing the most discussed topics on the platform for the year of 2019, as measured by the number of unique users tweeting about the topic. Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You ranked at number 6 in top movies worldwide.
The top 10 ranking is as follows:

- Joker (2019)
- Spider-Man: Far From Home
- The Lion King (2019)
- Weathering With You
- Captain Marvel
- It Chapter Two
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
- Frozen 2
Weathering With You opened in Japan on July 19. GKIDS has licensed the film for North America, and gave the film an “awards qualifying” theatrical run this year before a wider screening with subtitles and an English dub in early 2020. The film has so far earned 13.9 million yen (about US$127 million). The film is now the #7 highest-earning film of all time in Japan.
Hashtags #令和 (“Reiwa”, the new Japanese era name) and #台風19号 (Typhoon Hagibis) were also in the top news-related hashtags worldwide, at number 2 and number 5 respectively. Actress Kanna Hashimoto ranked at number 8 for top actors worldwide. Tennis player Naomi Osaka ranked at number 3 for top female athletes, and football player Keisuke Honda ranked at number 9 for top male athletes.
