Singapore’s Sakura Matsuri Event to Screen A Silent Voice, 26th Shin-chan Films

Anime Festival Asia revealed last Friday that its Sakura Matsuri: Anime Garden 2019 event will have screenings of the Crayon Shin-chan: Ramen Rebellion (Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Bakumori! Kung-Fu Boys ~Ramen Tairan~) and A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) films on March 30 and 31, respectively.

Crayon Shin-chan: Ramen Rebellion opened in Japan last April. The film had sold 315,000 tickets to earn 367 million yen (about US$3.42 million) and rank #2 in its opening weekend, and eventually earned US$14.7 million. Odex screened the film in Singapore last year.

The kung-fu action film is set in a Chinatown named Aiyātown in Kusakabe, Saitama (the setting of the main series). Crayon Shin-chan Bakusui! Yumemi World Dai Totsugeki director Wataru Takahashi returned to direct the film. Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari ~Saboten Daishūgeki scriptwriter Kimiko Ueno wrote the script.

Purple Plan screened the A Silent Voice film in Singapore in March 2017. The film ranked at #4 in its opening weekend.

The film earned 2.3 billion yen in Japan, and was the 19th highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2016.

The film is based on Yoshitoki Ōima’s manga of the same name. The story centers on two protagonists: Shoya Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya. Shoko is a deaf transfer student who is bullied by her classmates, with Shoya leading the bullying. Eventually, when the class is forced to take responsibility for bullying Shoko, the class turns to bullying Shoya to shift the blame. Years later, both Shoko and Shoya reunite.

The Sakura Matsuri: Anime Garden 2019 event will take place at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore on March 30 and 31. The event’s musical guests include ASCA, Hachioji-P/Kumonosu, Megumi Nakajima, Ayaka Ohashi, and ReoNa.
