Studio Ghibli has released the first trailer for the upcoming live-action sequel to Whisper of the Heart!
Written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, Whisper of the Heart was originally released in 1995 as an anime film about the story of two young people, Shizuku Tsukishima and Seiji Amasawa, who meet, fall in love, and promise to be together despite their future careers taking them in different directions.
The live-action sequel to Whisper of the Heart was first revealed back in 2020, but since then little else was shown about the movie. According to this new 30-second trailer, the sequel takes place 10 years after the original movie’s conclusion. Seiji and Shizuku, played by Tori Matsuzaka and Nana Seino, are young adults that have been keeping in touch via handwritten letters. The two are pursuing their goals to become a violin maker and a writer respectively, which have kept them far away from one another for quite a while.

While the original Whisper of the Heart was the highest-grossing domestic film in the Japanese box office in 1995, live-action adaptations of beloved anime are not guaranteed perform just as well, though, so only time will tell how this sequel will fare.
Whisper of the Heart‘s live-action sequel will release in Japan on October 14th, 2022.
