The Anime Tourism Association maintains a yearly list of otaku destinations for fans hoping to see the sights from their favorite anime. The Steins;Gate anime and visual novel series is full of real-life locations from around the Chiyoda area of Tokyo, including Akihabara. The area was voted into the 88 Anime Tourism list in 2018 and 2019.
The city was officially recognized as an anime tourism destination for Steins;Gate fans by the Anime Tourism Association on March 20. A presentation ceremony was held at the Kanda Myōjin Shrine, an anime tourist destination in its own right. Shrine employee Masanori Kishikawa, Kurisu voice actress Asami Imai, and Anime Tourism Association’s managing director Norimichi Suzuki attended the ceremony. A plaque and shuin stamp were presented to the shrine to display.

Last summer, the Kanda Myōjin Shrine held the “Exploring the Origin: Steins;Gate and Akihabara History Exhibition” event. The shrine currently has Steins;Gate amulets and ema for purchase.

The Steins;Gate series is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Set in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, the original game followed Rintarō Okabe as he changes fate by travelling between different world lines. The game inspired a 2011 television anime as well as the Steins;Gate – The Movie – Load Region of Déjà Vu sequel, and the Steins;Gate 0 game. The Steins;Gate 0 game was also adapted into an anime series last year. The game franchise boasts over 1 million copies.
