The Box Office Mojo website is listing Alita: Battle Angel — James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez‘s live-action film of Yukito Kishiro‘s Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga — with an estimated opening weekend earning of US$27.8 million, and a current four-day estimated domestic total of US$36,516,232, with a five-day gross of US$41.7 million. The film ranked #1 in the United States in its opening weekend.
The film is currently listed with an estimated foreign gross of US$94,369,663, with an estimated worldwide total of US$130,885,895. Entertainment news websites Deadline and Variety reported on Sunday that the film earned US$56.2 million in 86 markets outside of the United States over the weekend, including US$6.5 million in Russia, US$4.2 million in Mexico, US$2.9 million in Australia, and US$2.5 million in Thailand.
Deadline also stated that the U.S. box office saw its worst President’s Day weekend for earnings since 2001.
The film earned US$8,716,232 on its opening day in the United States last Thursday, with a per-screen average of US$2,300 over 3,790 theaters.
The movie has a reported production budget between US$150 million and US$200 million.
The film will open in China and Japan on Friday. The movie will get 4DX screenings in Japan.
The film’s U.S. release was delayed twice previously from July 20, 2018 and December 21, 2018. The movie stars Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Man Seeking Woman) in motion capture as Alita.
Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, Spy Kids) directed the film. James Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau produced the project, and Shutter Island’s Laeta Kalogridis penned a script. Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa performed a new song titled “Swan Song” for the film.
