Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You anime film won the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (ASPA) in Brisbane, Australia on Thursday. Hiroyasu Ishida’s Penguin Highway film was also nominated for the award. The two anime competed against Kirby Atkins’ Mosley, Oh Sung-yoon’s Underdog, and Behzad Nalbandi’s The Unseen films.
Weathering With You and Penguin Highway screened for free in Brisbane on November 16 and 17.
Shinkai won the Best Animated Feature Film category in APSA’s inaugural year in 2007 with 5 Centimeters Per Second. His Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below and your name. films also received nominations in the same category in 2011 and 2017, respectively.
The last anime to win the Best Animated Feature Film category at ASPA was Keiichi Hara’s Miss Hokusai film, which won in 2015. Aside from 5 Centimeters Per Second in 2007, other anime films that won the award include A Letter to Momo in 2012 and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in 2014.
